Go to Start and right click computer, and click properties. Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, click Change settings. Then in that window, click Change. You will get a choice of Domain or Workgroup. Select workgroup and name it MSHOME (You may have to restart after this.)
Now in XBMC, go to your network settings, then SMB settings, and change workgroup to MSHOME.
Back to your PC.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
Once there, it will say the name of your network, and then in parentheses it will say either Public or Private Network.
If it says Public, click customize to the right. Select Private, click next, and then close the window. If it already says private, this is already done for you.
OK, so now you have a private network. Windows will think anything that connects to your computer should be on the same network.
Now turn Network Discovery, File Sharing, Public Folder Sharing, and Media Sharing on. Printer sharing is optional. Password protected sharing should be off.
Go to your main Hard Drive where windows is installed and then go to Users. Right click the folder “Public.”
Go to the sharing tab, and it should be shared to \(computer Name)Public. If it isn’t, click share and in the drop down list select everyone. Click OK and wait for this to complete. Click OK to get out of properties.
Now put anything you want to share in the Public Folder. Personally, I just ditched my actual Music, Video, and Pictures folders in my normal User’s folder and put it all in Public Music, Video, and pictures. That seems to be easiest to manage.
Now in XBMC, just make a source in XBMC’s music, video, or Pictures, and make the path
smb://<Computer Name>/Public/<Music, Videos, or pictures.>
